Tabletop role-playing gamers have more options than ever for ways to play the games they love. An ever-growing number of companies are building virtual tabletops and map makers that offer full 3d environments for GMs and players. Here are a few of them!
Adventure Architect – Currently in public beta, this one has a free version you can download now, but it doesn’t let you host games. It’s not the best-looking VTT in my opinion, but at a glance, it looks quite fully featured.
Dungeon Alchemist – This one is not a virtual tabletop, just a map maker. Maps can be AI-generated and then customized, and they look really nice.
Game Master Engine – Like Adventure Architect, this one has a free version available for download (on Steam) but it doesn’t let you host games. Graphically it’s pretty simple, but it does have a nice cartoonish style.
Menyr – This one raised over half a million Euro on Kickstarter in October of 2022. It looks great, and seems to be very feature rich. Kickstarter backers get early access toward the end of 2022. Full release is slated for October 2023.
One D&D – Wizards of the Coast announced the development of a new VTT for the next edition of D&D, which is supposed to release in 2024. We don’t know much about it yet, and only got a minute or so of early alpha footage.
RPG Engine – This one is in early access on Steam with very positive reviews, and a free demo. It has a pretty cartoonish style and I don’t know much else about it!
RPG Stories – An as-of-yet unreleased 3D VTT coming to Early Access on Steam (estimated December 2022).
Talespire – Currently in early access on Steam, Talespire is a map maker and virtual tabletop with a really nice-looking style. This one raised around $300,000 on Kickstarter in 2019 and it seems to have quite a larger user base of map makers and players.
